A Good Fit:
We are especially interested in folks who are committed to living in a co-housing community and know what they are getting into. We would also like to give a little time for folks on the Robert’s Creek Co-housing ‘Waiting List’ to see our listing and be in touch with us if they are interested. We won’t make a decision of who to sell to right away as we will need a little time to consider the offers we receive. If you do wish to make an offer we will keep you informed as to the process and decision date. If you are up for it, we would love you to write us a short letter telling us a little about yourselves and why you are choosing co-housing.

Is Roberts Creek Co-Housing for You? Please read on to learn more about our co-housing community.Co-Housing is about living intentionally with others. It is not communal living as each family owns their own house and the land it sits upon. All co-housers own, in common, the common land, the Common House and any other buildings on the common land. Here in Roberts Creek Co-housing, we also own in common, a wood shop and work out space. Co-housing is not for everyone and yet it can be a rich and meaningful way to live. We have loved it and are sad to be heading east to be closer to my ageing family.

Community Contribution: We raised our son here and have been involved in the life of this community for almost 20 years. Part of living in community is that there are expectations that you get involved in the life of the community — its governance, care, health/well-being and oversight — in some capacity but those roles tend to be flexible and align with members skills, capacities, interests, and availabilities. Of course, there is a recognition that we all will have varying capacities over time for contribution and participation while living in the community.

There are a number of CoHo committees you could choose to be active on. The current Committees include: Legal Finance, Family, Indoor, Buildings and Grounds, Garden, Kitchen and Pantry, Conflict Resolution, Community Celebration and Connection, and Emergency Preparedness. Formal community decisions are made by consensus in our monthly Community Meetings. With over 20 years of working with this model our community has learned many lessons on how to make this process work well. While it is not always easy, it has gotten easier over the years and the work has been worth it. The results have been quite incredible overall. This is an amazing place to live! If committee work is not for you, there are many other ways you can contribute. For example, our monthly work parties help us keep our strata fees down (they are currently $220/month) and are great community builders! We always end with lunch lovingly made and shared! Many hands makes light work.

Social Life: The opportunities for formal and informal social gatherings is unlimited if you are inclined that way- you can initiate and you can participate. The Community Celebration and Connection Committee has lovely ways to bring us together.  Meals in the common house are also wonderful ways we come together as a community. These happen when members are inspired to gather a team and cook. They may happen once a week or more or less. Of course, if you are more of an introvert, you can pick and choose what you participate in. There is no requirement for participation.

Here it is worth telling you a little bit about the shared grounds. Our twenty acres of mostly forested land borders on Clack creek to the East and Cliff Gliker park to the north with the houses filling the south-west quadrant. Beautifully landscaped with many remaining mature cedars, the community has a large garden, lovingly cared for, that grows food for our community meals. Those meals are prepared in the central common house which has an industrial kitchen and an open indoor dining and gathering space that seats up to 50. It has been the centre of many meals, musical events, meetings, and celebrations, equipped with a top notch hi-fi system that makes movie nights and dance parties a blast. It also has a suite that households can book for visitors, an office, a children’s play area, a washer/dryer, and several smaller lounge areas for smaller group gatherings. It is in many ways the heart of the community. It is also a space that is sometimes used by the larger Roberts Creek community allowing co-housing to link and connect beyond just itself.

Multi-generational Community: Roberts Creek Co-housing is intentionally a multi-generational community. Recently, at Co-housing, we have been beginning to look at ‘Ageing in Community’ as some of our original population ages. Our elder is now 90 and we have quite a few members in their 70’s. They are vibrant and active but we are definitely looking for some more young families to join our community! It is wonderful for families!! If you would like to chat with other members with children currently living here, let me know and I will try to connect you with them.
